Our Focus Areas

Transforming the Manufacturing Industry

Sweden’s manufacturing industry is extensive, and its continued competitiveness is crucial for Swedish exports, economic growth, and welfare.

The manufacturing sector drives innovation and research, paving the way for sustainable solutions of the future. Despite a strong commitment to transformation within the industry, several clear challenges remain.

The Industry’s Contribution to Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The majority of emissions associated with the manufacturing industry – considering the entire product lifecycle – occur during the extraction and processing of materials, as well as through energy consumption during product use. A significant portion of these emissions arise within international value chains.

Economic Growth Drives Resource Use

The value creation and turnover of the manufacturing industry are directly linked to the number of products placed on the market and, consequently, the volume of resources consumed.

Currently, there is a low proportion of recycled and sustainably produced renewable materials and products. Circular design – focused on minimal resource use, optimal utilization, and long product lifespans – is still uncommon.

An Industry Under Pressure in a Turbulent World

Sweden is one of the world’s most trade-dependent economies, and its manufacturing industry plays a major role in this, being deeply integrated into global value chains. A volatile and rapidly changing geopolitical landscape is impacting the industry and its global supply networks. We are dependent on components, technologies, and critical materials sourced from other parts of the world.
