Eco-friendly barrier material for paper based food packaging
The packaging industry needs sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic materials, which are petroleum based and prone to microplastic degradation. Cassius, in collaboration with RISE Processum, Billerud, and Lantmännen, is developing a novel barrier material based on sustainably produced synthetic casein and biopolymer for paper based food packaging. Our innovative approach provides excellent barrier properties while being compatible with food grade regulations and industry standard machining techniques such as dispersion coating and heat sealing. The project’s goals for the phase 1 feasibility study are to validate the material’s market and regulatory viability, conduct a techno-economic evaluation, and estimate the environmental benefits. This project will lay the foundation for the industrial-scale production of a sustainable packaging material that aligns with global sustainability goals.
