Integration of LEDs on renewable substrates using additive manufacturing processes

To address the challenges posed by global megatrends across society, technology, economy, politics, and ecology, this project aims to develop resource-efficient and resilient electronics through sustainable LED integration. LEDs, essential for lighting, sensing, and IoT applications, will be surface-mounted on renewable substrates such as PLA using additive manufacturing techniques. Conductive traces will be printed instead of using etched copper, reducing material waste and environmental impact. The project will investigate the recyclability of LEDs and the feasibility of biodegradable substrates, targeting a 75% reduction in CO₂ emissions. Various application scenarios will be explored, and based on the findings, a comprehensive plan for future development and upscaling will be proposed to demonstrate a pathway toward sustainable electronic systems.
