Prediction of the impurity impacts on the mechanical properties of recycled PET foams
To help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, polymer foam manufacturers seek more efficient use of materials and energy, as well as resilient supply chains. A major step is to use recycled sandwich materials in new PET foam cores. However, this may introduce microscale impurities that affect performance. The project will take the first step in assessing this potential. We will study how recycling-induced impurities influence the mechanical properties of PET foams, and in parallel perform a life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify environmental benefits. The results will provide foam core manufacturers with crucial knowledge for future strategies, enabling them to balance mechanical performance with sustainability goals and move towards more circular and resource-efficient production.
