Ways to create net-zero foundries (CASTWELL)

CASTWELL is a system demonstrator supporting the transition of the Swedish foundry industry toward net-zero emissions, circular resource use, and sustainable production. Through collaboration between foundries, material suppliers, research institutes, and industry partners, the project develops and demonstrates innovative solutions that can be implemented in real production environments, including low-carbon cast iron, circular use of foundry sand, reuse of refractory materials, and bio-based low-emission binders. These innovative solutions reduce climate impact, minimize waste, and enable circular material flows.

The work is organized into six work packages, with four focusing on technical development and demonstration, while system-level analysis, techno-economic assessment, and project management ensure sustainability, feasibility, and effective implementation. CASTWELL strengthens industrial competitiveness while contributing to a climate-neutral and resource-efficient manufacturing sector.
