RE-GRIP – REcycled material within Saab – from GRIP carbon fibre waste to secondary products

The RE-GRIP project aims to develop a circular value chain for carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) by remanufacturing production waste from Saab Aeronautics into new secondary applications, including components at Saab Surveillance. Currently, the production waste is incinerated, which results in high emissions and material value losses. By creating new material in the form of Discontinuous Fibre Composites (DFC), waste can instead be reused, which reduces the carbon footprint, preserves material value and strengthens the security of supply chain in Europe. The project, an 18-month feasibility study in close collaboration between industry and academia, includes material development, the development of a demonstrator, and life cycle and cost analyses. The results will demonstrate technical, economic and environmental potential, form the basis for future business models and industrialization, and contribute to Saab and the defense industry achieving climate goals and increasing resource efficiency.
