RES2AM: Resilient and resource-efficient additive manufacturing of large/advanced products
RES2AM is developing a modular, reconfigurable industrial system for large-scale Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB). The project tackles Sweden’s Net Zero Industry ambitions by reducing material waste, energy use, lead times, and logistics through first-time-right manufacturing and digital on-demand production. Unlike technology-focused AM efforts, RES2AM takes a system-level approach. It integrates smart design, multi-sensor monitoring with AI-driven quality assurance, circular business models, qualification frameworks, skills development, and digital infrastructure into one coherent demonstrator steered by a Decision Support System. The system will be validated in regulated industrial test beds such as aerospace, nuclear, and heavy machinery. By combining monitoring-based certification, digital inventory, and resilient supply-chain models, RES2AM aims to cut trial-and-error by up to 70%, reduce qualification time by 30–50%, enable 20–40% material savings, and significantly lower CO₂ emissions. Led by RISE in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology and leading Swedish OEMs and international technology providers, RES2AM delivers a cross-sector blueprint for sustainable, resilient, and competitive industrial AM in Sweden.
