Innovation programmes are crucial for Sweden’s competitiveness

Sweden’s competitiveness is closely linked to the ability of its industry to transition to climate-neutral production. Innovation programmes such as Net Zero Industry play a central role in accelerating innovation and bridging the gap between research and industrial application by bringing together industry, academia and the public sector, says Pia Sandvik, CEO of the Association of Swedish Engineering Industries and Chair of the Net Zero Industry steering group.
Swedish manufacturing is a key driver of employment, exports and innovation. At the same time, the sector is facing a major transformation where climate requirements, technological development and shifting value chains create both challenges and new opportunities. National innovation programmes play a crucial role in this transition by bringing stakeholders together, enabling joint priorities and facilitating risk-taking in key areas. Sweden has a long and unique history of such collaborations, and research programmes have in many ways been decisive for the development of Swedish industry.
– Net Zero Industry accelerates the climate transition by enabling collaboration between industry, academia and the public sector in the development and implementation of fossil-free and climate-neutral solutions. This shortens the time from research to commercialisation and reduces both technical and financial risks, says Pia Sandvik.
Through collaborations in areas such as fossil-free production, electrification and circularity, Swedish companies gain the opportunity to develop new competencies, test system solutions and strengthen their position in the global market. It also helps attract investments and strengthens the long-term competitiveness of Swedish industry.
Contributing to climate goals and industrial growth
Net Zero Industry creates value far beyond individual projects. By developing new solutions and business models, companies strengthen their competitiveness while accelerating the industry’s climate transition.
– The programme contributes both to Sweden reaching its climate targets and to companies strengthening their competitiveness through new solutions that open up new markets and value chains, says Pia Sandvik.
Reducing dependence on fossil fuels and imported input materials also makes Swedish industry better prepared and more adaptive in an uncertain global environment.
Collaboration that shortens the path from idea to industry
Through Net Zero Industry, companies gain access to a shared platform for collaboration, innovation and knowledge exchange. This enables them to share risks, build competencies and bring ideas into practical use more quickly.
– Through Net Zero Industry, companies can test new technologies, develop skills and move faster from idea to industrial application, says Pia Sandvik.
For these initiatives to reach their full potential, long-term and predictable conditions are also needed, for example in energy supply and infrastructure, as well as projects based on the concrete needs of industry that can be scaled broadly.
Looking ahead, the focus will be on scaling up innovations and creating even stronger links between research and industrial implementation.
– We need to focus on solutions that can be implemented widely and contribute both to climate impact and competitiveness. As Chair of the Net Zero Industry steering group, I want to help mobilise industry around shared priorities that make the climate transition a strategic competitive advantage for Sweden, says Pia Sandvik.
