Recycling of polymer composite components for a sustainable marine industry (RECOMP)

The project evaluates the feasibility of recycling graphene-coated natural fiber/epoxy composite structures, which are currently difficult to reuse due to their thermoset nature and are often landfilled or incinerated. It will assess the technical and economic potential of mechanical recycling routes, focusing on how graphene coatings influence filler compatibility, processing behavior, and achievable performance in biopolyester matrices. Using insights from Linköping University’s biocomposite research, Grafren AB’s patented graphene fiber technology, Trifilon’s compounding expertise, and X Shore’s marine applications, the study will identify key strengths, limitations, and resource needs. The outcome will provide a decision basis for future implementation toward circular, high-performance biocomposites supporting Sweden’s Net Zero Industry 2025 goals.
