From LPG to Electric – Converting Industrial Heating Systems (GAStoEl)

From LPG to electricity in industrial heating

Industrial heating processes must meet demanding requirements for temperature, product quality and reliable operation. Replacing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with electricity therefore requires solutions that work in existing facilities and are economically viable. GAStoEl2 investigates how this transition can be prepared and which barriers must be addressed before investment.

Nordic Energy Audit coordinates the project with RISE and the industrial companies ProfilGruppen, A-lackering and SKF. Their applications provide the basis for analysing heat demand, energy use, electrical capacity requirements and grid connection conditions. Potential solutions are assessed in terms of investment, operating costs, climate benefits and effects on production and product quality. The project also identifies the technical, economic and organisational conditions needed for implementation.

Prioritised solutions are developed through supplier dialogue and review of quotations. Feasible or conditionally feasible options are translated into plans for future procurement, installation and commissioning, specifying responsibilities, preparations, decisions and remaining barriers. Where no feasible option is identified, the reasons are documented. Installation in industrial production is outside the project scope, although demonstration tests may be conducted if needed.

The results will support the participating companies’ investment decisions and provide knowledge for other businesses with similar heating processes. Ultimately, the project aims to reduce fossil fuel dependence and climate impact by clarifying the steps towards investment.
